Accessibility improvements completed at three TPE stations
TransPennine Express (TPE) has successfully completed a series of accessibility upgrades across three of its stations -Dewsbury, Grimsby Town, and Scunthorpe -as part of its ongoing commitment to making rail travel more inclusive for all passengers.
At Dewsbury station, improvements include the addition of new handrails along the entire length of the Milton Walk ramp and on the staircase, leading from the ticket hall, significantly improving the support and safety for passengers navigating these areas.
The top and bottom sections of the ramp have also been resurfaced.
On the ticket hall staircase, colour-contrasting has been added to the stairs and new anti-slip treads have been fitted to aid visibility and reduce the risk of slips.
Additionally, the cycle stair ramps on the staircases to Platforms 1 and 2 have been replaced to better accommodate cyclists and improve overall usability.
At Grimsby Town station the handrails on the footbridge have been added and painted to make them more visible.
At Scunthorpe station handrails have been replaced, and colour-contrasting and anti-slip treads have been added to the stairs leading to the upper car park.
To assist visually impaired passengers, the existing zebra crossing has been reinstated at Scunthorpe and complemented with new tactile paving on both sides.
Chris Jeffery, Accessibility Lead for TransPennine Express, said: “We’re really pleased to have completed these upgrades, which make a real difference to our customers’ experience.
“Everyone should be able to travel with ease and confidence, and these improvements are part of our wider commitment to create a more accessible and inclusive railway.”
The work for the improvements began in March 2025 and forms part of a broader package of accessibility enhancements across the TransPennine Express network, which have recently included all station toilets becoming stoma friendly, and BSL (British Sign Language) screens at Manchester Airport being upgraded to include information on the next train into the city centre.
