Fond farewell to Glasgow conductor Bernie after 44 years on the railway

TransPennine Express (TPE) has said a fond farewell to Glasgow-based conductor Bernie McBride, who retired in May after an incredible 44-year career on the railway.

Bernie’s railway journey began in 1982 with British Rail at Falkirk Grahamston station, where he handled customer enquiries before progressing through a variety of roles across Scotland.

His career saw him work in ticket offices at Falkirk and Stirling, become a shift leader at Edinburgh Waverley, and later take on the role of Retail Quality Supervisor, overseeing stations and colleagues across Lothian, Central Scotland and Fife.

Following a period as a train driver, Bernie joined TPE in 2007 as one of the first conductors recruited to the company’s newly opened Glasgow Central depot, a role he would proudly hold for almost two decades.

Reflecting on his career, Bernie said: “I applied for one of the conductor roles when TPE opened its Glasgow depot and I was lucky enough to be offered a position.

“It proved to be a fantastic move, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on the railway.”

Rosie McNicol, Area Customer Experience Manager at TPE, said: “Bernie has been a valued and respected member of the team throughout his time with us.

“His wealth of railway knowledge, professionalism and dedication to both customers and colleagues have made a lasting impact.

“On behalf of everyone at TPE, I’d like to thank Bernie for his many years of service and wish him a long, happy and well-deserved retirement.”
