Free blood pressure checks at TPE's safeguarding hub-2

Free blood pressure checks available at Hull Paragon station

Members of the public are being invited to get free blood pressure checks at Hull Paragon station as part of a new weekly health initiative hosted at the Safer Hull Paragon Hub.

The sessions, delivered by Allied Pharmacies in partnership with TransPennine Express, are open to anyone passing through the station and are designed to make it easier for people to access simple health checks.

More than 80 people attended the first two sessions, with future blood pressure checks now set to take place every Wednesday at the hub, which is located on the station concourse.

Some of the readings taken so far have fallen into an at-risk category, with those affected being encouraged to seek further advice from their GP.

The checks are being offered from the Safer Hull Paragon Hub, a multi-agency safeguarding space created to help make Hull Paragon Station safer and provide a consistent point of contact for people who may need support.

Opened by TransPennine Express (TPE) following a £100,000 investment, the hub was developed in partnership with Hull City Council, British Transport Police, Humberside Police, local community agencies and charities. It transformed an empty retail unit within the interchange into a welcoming space for station users, community groups and support organisations.

As well as supporting vulnerable people and increasing the visibility of local services, the hub provides space for community partners to speak directly with rail and bus users, helping people access advice, reassurance and practical support in the heart of the city.

Stephen O'Callaghan, Safeguarding and Crime Prevention Lead at TransPennine Express, said: “The Safer Hull Paragon Hub is all about bringing support services closer to the people who may need them, in a place that is familiar, accessible and well used by the local community.

“The response to the blood pressure checks has been really positive so far, and it shows the value of using the station as more than just a transport hub.”

The health sessions are part of a wider programme of activity taking place at the hub over the coming weeks.

On Thursday 20 August, Andy’s Man Club will hold a public engagement information stall opposite the Hull Paragon railway gateline.

Facilitated by the TPE’s safeguarding team, the event will give people the chance to find out more about the support available and speak with representatives in an accessible station setting.

Age UK Hull and East Yorkshire will also be at the hub on Thursday 3 September for a “Brew and a Natter” session between 10am and 2pm. The drop-in event is aimed at anyone curious about volunteering, looking for support at home, or simply wanting to chat with the Age UK team.
