Green roof bike lockers take root at two TransPennine Express Yorkshire stations
TransPennine Express (TPE) has unveiled new cycle lockers topped with green roofs at two of its Yorkshire stations, growing both passenger facilities and station green space.
The secure storage units, installed at Selby and Brough, each provide space for five bicycles. Their living roofs are designed to absorb rainwater, support pollinating species, and help capture carbon dioxide.
Located on Platform 1 at each station, customers can use the facilities for free by bringing their own padlock or bike lock.
Steve Gilder, Environment Delivery Lead at TransPennine Express, said: “As well as providing a safe space for people to leave their bikes, these lockers bring additional environmental benefits through biodiversity improvement and weather resilience.
“We’re hoping they’ll encourage more of our customers to swap cars for bikes when travelling to and from our stations, helping to cut congestion and reduce carbon emissions.”
While e-bikes are not permitted on TPE trains, passengers commuting with them can securely store them in the new lockers before boarding.
The scheme joins a growing number of biodiversity projects introduced by TPE across its network, from planting more green spaces to encourage more wildlife and pollinators, installing bird and bat boxes as well as introducing beehives at one of the train operators’ stations.
