More than just trains: TPE communications apprentice shares her experience beyond the tracks

A communications apprentice is sharing her experience of what it's like to work at TransPennine Express (TPE) after leaving college and says there’s “something for everyone.”

In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, TransPennine Express (TPE) is highlighting the diverse career paths the rail industry has to offer – and that while traditional roles are available, it’s not just about trains.

Megan Asquith, 19, from Huddersfield, joined TPE in September 2024 as a communications apprentice where she works across all areas of communications for the train operator during a two-year apprenticeship programme.

In her role she works on a variety of projects, including internal communications, planning corporate events, photography and social media. She even helped launch TPE's new TikTok channel.

Reflecting on her experience, Megan said: “I never expected to work in rail as I didn’t even know roles outside the stations and onboard trains were available, especially not in communications.

“However, the apprenticeship opened my eyes to a new side of the industry. I get to gain hands-on experience whilst working towards a qualification.

“No two days are the same and every day opportunities arise where I can use different skills; it’s been an incredible experience so far.”

Megan applied for the apprenticeship to gain practical experience and to grow her skills, she said. “I wanted to develop my abilities in a professional setting and what I enjoy is how I can balance my college work with my on-the-job work.

“I set aside a certain number of hours a week and spread them across different days, which I find really helpful as it means I’m not restricted.”

TPE has offered a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities over the past couple of years, including positions in social media, communications, marketing, finance, and engineering. These roles highlight the diverse careers available to individuals with a variety of skills and interests.

Lindsay Penney, Early Careers Manager for TPE, said: “Megan is a great example of how TPE’s apprenticeships in the rail industry can open doors to a wide variety of career paths.

“We’re incredibly proud of Megan and all of our apprentices, and we are committed to offering opportunities that help them grow and succeed in their chosen careers.

“Keep a look out on our website and social media channels for upcoming apprenticeship opportunities in September 2025.”

Megan encourages anyone considering a career in rail to explore future apprenticeship openings.

She said: “My apprenticeship has offered me the a chance to start a career in communications, something I might not have considered before.

“I’d really encourage anyone to look out for future apprenticeships, I truly believe there is something for everyone.”
