WATCH: New window film to block heat from TPE trains – but not the view
TransPennine Express (TPE) is hoping for some more sunshine this summer and to save energy by trialling two new window films which will block the sun’s rays from train windows but not the views.
The train operator is the first in the UK to test the tinted window films and hopes it will help reduce diesel consumption through decreasing energy used by the air conditioning system on trains.
Once attached to the windows, the film will block more than 30% of the solar energy and 99.9% of UV rays.
And customers will see a benefit too, as it could help cool down carriages in addition to saving energy.
The trial will take place over six months, testing different tint types on one of TPE’s Class 185 trains to capture their success during summer and winter weather.
Nicola Martin, Head of Sustainability at TPE, said: “This could be a gamechanger in hot weather conditions, reducing glare from the sun and reducing energy needed by the air con to cool down our customers.
“We are committed to having a positive impact on the environment – and this is one of the many schemes across our network that aims to do just that.
Nicola added: “We recommend customers to stay hydrated, carry water with them and always check before they travel during hot weather.”
TPE aims to lead and enable sustainable tourism and transport across the North of England and into Scotland through its commitment to sustainability.
