Try the Train-9

Hull SEN students try the train for the first time with TPE

A group of SEN students from Hull have taken their first ever journeys by rail after taking part in a series of “Try the Train” days run by TransPennine Express (TPE).

Around 25 students aged 16 to 18 from Northcott School and Sixth Form joined the sessions, which aimed to build their confidence and equip them with the practical skills needed to travel independently.

For many of the young people, the return trip to Selby marked the first time they had stepped onto a train.

TPE staff guided them through each part of the experience, from finding service information to navigating unfamiliar stations, identifying railway colleagues and understanding how to stay safe on the network.

Robert Walker, Accessibility and Equality Impact Officer at TransPennine Express, said: “Our Try the Train days are designed to give people the tools they need to take the next steps in their lives, whether that’s accessing further education, exploring employment opportunities or simply having the confidence to travel on public transport.”
