TPE gets the North up and dancing for its Mental Health Awareness Week
TransPennine Express (TPE) is inviting the public to join its staff taking part in a series of free dance sessions as it marks Mental Health Awareness Week.
The wellbeing activities are part of the train operator’s own Mental Health Awareness Week, taking place between Monday 27 April and Sunday 3 May 2026.
This year’s focus is “Move for your Mind” which focuses on the positive role that movement, exercise and connection can play in reducing stress, improving mood and supporting overall wellbeing.
A dance session will take place at Manchester Airport station on Tuesday 28 April at 12pm, followed by a Zumba class at Huddersfield station on Thursday 30 April at 12pm.
Both events are open to the public, with the operator encouraging people to get moving and support their wellbeing.
The activity forms part of TPE’s wider commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive workplace, while also engaging with the communities it serves.
As well as this the programme also reflects the train operator’s commitment to helping colleagues adopt healthy habits that support long term wellbeing on how movement and physical activity can boost mental health.
Nicola Buckley, People Director at TPE, said: “Looking after our mental health doesn’t have to start with big steps; it can begin with something as simple as getting up and moving.
“Through these events, we want to bring people together, break down stigma and make it easier for colleagues and the public to talk openly and access support whenever they need it.”
TPE offers a range of colleague support, including a 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme, providing confidential round-the-clock support for mental health, financial and practical concerns for employees and their families.
The operator also has a Mental Health Guide to help support and offer vital signposting and advice for anyone who may be experiencing mental ill health.
This sits alongside trained Mental Health First Aiders in the business, who provide wellbeing guidance and access to professional support where required.
TPE has also introduced therapy dog Nya through its Pets as Therapy programme.
As a certified support dog, Nya visits stations to offer comfort, reduce stress and encourage positive interaction among passengers and colleagues.
The organisation has also launched Move Ambassadors to champion the role of physical activity in supporting mental wellbeing.
With its workforce growing from around 1,200 in 2018/19 to more than 1,900 in 2024/25, the train operator continues to strengthen its wellbeing support – helping colleagues feel valued and able to thrive.
