TPE named employer of the year at prestigious Women in Rail awards

TransPennine Express has been named as employer of the year at a prestigious awards ceremony, which aims to celebrate the women in the rail sector.

The Women in Rail Awards took place at the Roundhouse in Camden, London on Thursday 15 May.  Hosted by television presenter Gail Porter, the event saw hundreds of industry representatives come together to celebrate women in rail.

One of the train operator’s standout developments has been the launch of the ‘Women at TPE’ network, which now includes more than150 women across all levels of the business.

TPE also held its own ‘Week of Inclusion’ earlier this year which highlighted women’s development, returning to work after having a baby and neurodiversity. Role models from all areas of the business to promote topics relevant to women in the workplace and the rail industry.

TPE’s Lucy Lightbown, from Bolton also scooped the Female Apprentice of the Year accolade.

Lucy recently completed TPE’s first ever sustainability apprenticeship which took place over two years.

During this time, she has focussed on helping TPE to continue to lower its carbon footprint, become as sustainable as possible, and encourage more people to take the train over less environmentally friendly travel options.

Women in Rail was created to improve diversity in the UK rail industry through providing networking opportunities and support for all women within the sector.

Nicola Buckley, People Director at TransPennine Express, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be named as ‘Employer of the Year’. It’s a real testament to the hard work of our colleagues who are pushing for progress every day. Inclusion is central to how we work and how we grow — and we’re proud to be creating an environment where women can truly thrive.”

“And a huge well done to Lucy, during her time here she has shown so much passion, commitment, and an eagerness to learn.”

The Women in Rail network provides a safe and empowering space for women to discuss personal and professional matters, while building on existing partnerships and platforms such as Women in Rail.
