TPE praised for military reservist support

Train operator TransPennine Express (TPE) is thrilled to have received a Silver Award from the Ministry of Defence recognising its support for the Armed Forces community in its workplace.

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme was launched to reward employers who support Defence People objectives and encourage others to do the same. This includes employing serving and former members of the Armed Forces community, and demonstrating flexibility towards training and mobilisation commitments for Reservists and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers.

This achievement builds upon previous work in this area as in 2022 the train operator signed the Armed Forces Covenant, pledging support to the Armed Forces community, and obtained the Bronze Level Award of the Employer Recognition Scheme.

Dan Fox, Community Manager for TransPennine Express, said: “To be awarded the Silver Level award for the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme is a great honour, and it we hope that it will serve as a visible badge representing the ongoing support we provide to Defence people within our business.

“The Armed Forces, and those who serve, are assets to our nation and it is by them that we are  defended and supported when all isn’t right with the world. We’re thrilled that as a business we can to provide this level of support to Defence People, be that while they’re actively serving as a reservist, or upon their return to civilian life as a veteran.

“Both the Armed Forces Covenant and the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme are fantastic initiatives which bring the importance of support to the forefront of any organisation. Achieving this award not only enables us to further demonstrate the importance we place on Defence People, but also aids us as we look forward to what additional support we can provide into the future.”

Commenting on the announcement of the 2023 Employer Recognition Scheme Silver awards; Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Reserve & Cadets), Major General Marc Overton said:

“I would like to thank and congratulate the recipients of this year’s Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Awards. A Silver award recognises the fantastic efforts of employers throughout the UK who have both elevated their commitments under the Armed Forces Covenant and provided actual benefits to the Armed Forces Community.

The winners should all be proud of their life-changing impact and fresh opportunities they are providing to our Reservists, veterans and their families. The number of winners this year yet again shows that the Armed Forces family talent pool is also providing tangible business benefit.”
