TransPennine Express set to recruit up to 53 new conductors across its network

TransPennine Express (TPE) is looking for up to 53 new conductors to join its network across the North of England in the next year.

The roles are part of an on-going process to recruit as and when existing staff members retire, earn promotions or join another company.

Successful applicants will join the train operator's talent pool and will be first in line as soon as new jobs open up.

A total of five roles each could be available based at TPE depots in Cleethorpes, Sheffield, Preston, Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Airport, Liverpool, Newcastle, Hull and Scarbough.

A further eight would be based in York.

The practice is common across the rail industry – ensuring there is no shortage of staff, so trains continue to run smoothly for customers.

New recruits will have to pass rigorous interview tests focussing on concentration and customer service as well as undertake around three months training to become a qualified conductor

The train operator is actively encouraging people with no rail industry experience to apply.

Andrew McClements, Customer Experience & Transformation Director at TransPennine Express, said: "We are looking for customer-focused people with excellent communication skills who thrive in a fast-paced environment and may not have considered a career in rail before.

"Successful applicants will demonstrate a high level of responsibility, a strong work ethic and a commitment to maintaining safety standards.”

The operator is offering a salary of £27,877 per annum which increases to £36,411 per annum once qualified as well as other benefits including free and discounted rail travel.

Andrew said: “We want our workforce to reflect the communities we serve and we’re proud to include people from all walks of life in our team. So, if you are thinking of changing careers or are just starting working life, this could be the role for you.”

The train operator also recently announced it was recruiting for up to 5 conductor roles in Glasgow.
