Volunteers from TransPennine Express collect half a bike, food packaging and cigarette butts at Scarborough beach clean
Staff from Transpennine Express (TPE) collected six bags of litter and abandoned items such as food packaging, plastic fragments, cigarette butts and even half a bicycle while taking part in a national beach clean-up event on Scarborough North Bay beach last week (Thursday 24 September).
Organised by The Marine Conservation Society, the annual Great British Beach Clean is one of the largest marine citizen science activities of its kind in the UK.
Colleagues spent the day litter-picking and recording their finds to contribute to marine waste data. All items collected were recorded and will contribute to UK-wide data on the state of our beaches to inform targeted waste initiatives going forward.
Steve Gilder, Environment Delivery Lead at TransPennine Express said: “We operate Scarborough station, close to soke wonderful beaches, as well as transporting people to our various coastal destinations, so we wanted to make a difference for our local community by taking part in the Great British Beach Clean.”
“I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered and spent the day with us – just by giving up a few hours, our actions will contribute to making our beaches cleaner and safer for us all to enjoy.
“At TPE we are committed to creating a better environment for the communities we serve.”
TPE aims to lead and enable sustainable tourism and transport across the North of England and into Scotland via its commitments to customers and sustainability.
