Volunteers from TransPennine Express collect more than 20kg of rubbish at Cleethorpes beach clean
Station and office staff from Transpennine Express (TPE) collected 22 kilograms of litter and abandoned items such as food packaging, plastic fragments, cigarette butts and towels while taking part in a national beach clean-up event on Cleethorpes beach.
Organised by The Marine Conservation Society, the annual Great British Beach Clean is one of the largest marine citizen science activities of its kind in the UK.
Colleagues spent the day litter-picking and recording their finds to contribute to marine waste data. All items collected were recorded and will contribute to UK-wide data on the state of our beaches to inform targeted waste initiatives going forward.
Steve Gilder, Environment Delivery Lead at TransPennine Express said: “We operate Cleethorpes station which is next to the beach, and we wanted to make a difference for our local community by taking part in the Great British Beach Clean.
“I’d like to thank everyone who volunteered and spent the day with us – just by giving up a few hours, our actions will contribute to making our beaches cleaner and safer for us all to enjoy.
“At TPE we are committed to creating a better environment for the communities we serve.”
TPE aims to lead and enable sustainable tourism and transport across the North of England and into Scotland via its commitments to customers and sustainability.
