Extreme hot weather set to impact TransPennine Express services

With extreme heat weather warnings in place from Sunday (17 July) into early next week, rail operator TransPennine Express (TPE) is urging customers to plan carefully and be prepared.

More hot weather is forecast over the weekend, with temperatures set to climb from Sunday and the hottest temperatures expected on Monday (18 July) and Tuesday (19 July), and disruption to rail services is likely.  

With a number of heat speed restrictions planned to be implemented by Network Rail on Monday and Tuesday, TPE will be running an amended train plan and customers are advised to only travel on these days if absolutely necessary.

Anyone making an essential journey is urged to be prepared and bring water and sunscreen with them, as well as checking their journey very carefully before travelling. Due to the speed restrictions, journeys will take longer, and delays and cancellations are likely.

Kathryn O’Brien, Customer Service and Operations Director for TransPennine Express said: “With weather warnings in place between Sunday and Monday and a number of speed restrictions planned to be imposed on Monday and Tuesday, we will be running an amended train plan and are urging people to only travel if absolutely necessary on these dates.

“This is likely to be some of the hottest weather we’ve ever seen, and it’s really important that anyone making an essential journey is prepared and brings water and sunscreen along with them.

“Journeys will take longer than usual, and further disruption is likely. Anyone using our services on Monday and Tuesday should check before they travel and allow plenty of extra time.”        

Customers can check their journeys via the TPE website: tpexpress.co.uk/travel-updates or at nationalrail.co.uk. Customers may defer their TPE journeys to either Wednesday 20 or Thursday 21 July 2022 or a full refund may be obtained at: tpexpress.co.uk/help/refunds with no admin fee.
