Inspiration exhibition train brings landmark national tour to a close in Scarborough

TransPennine Express (TPE) welcomed visitors aboard Inspiration as the hugely popular free exhibition train completed its nationwide tour at Scarborough station.

The interactive attraction, which welcomed more than 100,000 visitors during its journey across Britain, called at Scarborough station from 20–22 June, bringing its 60-location, year-long tour to a memorable close.

Part of Railway 200, the national celebration marking 200 years since the birth of the modern railway, Inspiration travelled the length and breadth of Britain, bringing the story of the railway to life through immersive displays, fascinating facts and hands-on experiences.

Co-curated with the National Railway Museum, the travelling exhibition featured interactive exhibits, personal stories and rare artefacts exploring the railway’s past, present and future.

Visitors in Scarborough took part in engineering challenges, discovered lesser-known careers on the railway and learned how rail transformed travel, communities and everyday life across Britain.

As the final destination on Inspiration’s remarkable journey, Scarborough provided customers, families and railway enthusiasts with a fitting finale and the last opportunity to experience the unique exhibition as Railway 200 celebrations rolled into their closing chapter.

A special event was held on the final day with Railway 200’s Programme Manager Emma Roberts and TPE’s Strategic Development & Stakeholder Director George Thomas to mark the final occasion to mark the end of Inspiration’s historic journey and celebrate the success of the nationwide tour.

George said: “We were delighted to welcome Railway 200’s Inspiration Train to Scarborough for the final stop of its incredible nationwide tour, which has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors and celebrated the people, places and achievements that have shaped Britain’s railway over the past 200 years.

“Scarborough was a fitting place to bring the journey to a close, reflecting the town’s proud railway heritage and our own Railway 200 celebrations at TPE.

“It was fantastic to see so many people come aboard the exhibition and celebrate this important anniversary with us.

“As we reflect on the railway’s remarkable past, we also hope the event has inspired visitors to look ahead with excitement to a more joined-up, reliable and customer-focused railway for the future.”

Emma Roberts, Railway 200 Programme Manager, said: “Turning a train into a multimedia exhibition and touring it across one of the world’s busiest rail networks was hugely ambitious – and there were many people who said it couldn’t be done.

“Now, after over one hundred thousand visitors across 250 event days, this unique project stands as testament to the skill, creativity and sheer determination of hundreds of rail industry colleagues.

“To everyone who played their part: thank you. You have achieved something truly extraordinary – something that will shape the future of our railway.”
